But he always came back to one issue: what’s the purpose of it all? Survival is one thing, but life should be more than just making it to the end of the day.

In Something More, we learn that the Book of Ecclesiastes provides that intriguing answer. It “teaches us how to live well in a broken world.” Potter not only breaks down Ecclesiastes but touches on key moments of his own life where he was lost and what guided him forward. This is an inspirational, poignant memoir as well as a helpful guide for readers who are seeking purpose.

Potter hasn’t had the easiest life; his childhood was unusual in that he spent almost every waking moment outside of school caring for two elderly neighbors by himself before moving out on his own at a young age. One of the defining elements of his life in adulthood is his daughter suffering from a degenerative disease requiring either her parents or a trained nurse at all times.

Throughout his life, Potter turned to Ecclesiastes and found a fount of wisdom that touted above all else the importance of living life, not just enduring until the promised afterlife. He would return to Ecclesiastes not only for himself but friends and family to help them. And now to help you.

The Biblical commentary is fascinating as it deftly balances breaking down the material in context and reframing the lessons through his own real life experiences. To people outside the faith, the Bible can be daunting with an archaic language, but Potter provides the direct material before explaining what the section is really saying. With the inclusion of stories from his own life and pop culture references, the material becomes accessible. While the Bible and Something More is aimed at people of a certain faith, the lessons in Ecclesiastes are surprisingly applicable to anyone: life is unpredictable, don’t focus on the past to the detriment of the present, practice balance in all aspects of life, etc.

Something More is an enthralling blend of heartfelt memoir with a Biblical study aimed at those feeling lost in life and seeking a better way forward. It weaves thoughtful and expansive commentary on Ecclesiastes with a poignant life story about how a man applied the lessons to his own life, even in the face of difficult times. With an engaging and patient voice, the book provides useful life lessons that’ll help you take the next step in living your own fulfilling life.

Buy from Amazon

Buy from Bookshop

Thank you for reading John M.
