The real-life models included Oheka Castle, in Huntington, New York. Even now, over a century after its construction began in 1915, Oheka Castle remains the second-largest private estate in the United States.<\/p>\n

Francis Cugat designed the iconic cover of The Great Gatsby <\/h3>\n

Fitzgerald was so taken with Cugat\u2019s artwork that he rewrote portions of the novel to better include it. Francis Cugat went on to design for the actor Douglas Fairbanks.<\/p>\n

The Critics Didn\u2019t Love it<\/h3>\n

The first review to appear in New York, just two days after publication, was headed F. SCOTT FITZGERALD\u2019S LATEST A DUD. The reviewer for the Brooklyn Eagle claimed she could not find \u2018one chemical trace of magic, life, irony, romance or mysticism in all of \u2018The Great Gatsby\u2019 and concluded that \u2018the boy\u2019 [Fitzgerald] was \u2018simply puttering around.\u2019<\/p>\n
