Rescued from a cult by their father during their youth, they carry figurative and literal scars but have managed to overcome their traumatic past.

Their latest case, brought by the enigmatic Mr. Woodbine, involves tracking down something referred to as “Royal Jelly,” which the brothers suspect might be the deadly herbicide Agent Orange. This mission propels them into a chaotic week filled with unexpected twists and relentless tension.

The pacing is brisk with short chapters that drive the narrative forward. The dialogue is a standout feature, showcasing Canning’s flair for quick, witty, and often off-kilter banter. Initially, the rapid-fire exchanges might seem overwhelming, but once you acclimate, it’s clear these conversations are the lifeblood of the story, drawing you deeper into the world of Teddy and Ralph.

The brothers’ journey through LA’s seedy underbelly is painted with a vivid brush. From strip mall offices to the coastal highways, Canning’s depiction of Los Angeles feels gritty and real. Each character they encounter—from the eccentric Ms. Beauchamp to the dubious Big Sue—and every adversary they face—from the comically annoying and sometimes helpful Stinney’s Scouts to the scarier Janusians— help build an intricate web of a plot.

Canning doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of the story either, delving into the traumatic cult past of his protagonists with sensitivity and depth. The brothers’ shared history of cult survival is not just backstory; it’s a critical element that shapes their actions and decisions throughout the novel. This blend of personal history and present danger makes their quest to uncover the truth about Royal Jelly all the more compelling.

As they dig deeper, Teddy and Ralph uncover connections that suggest their family’s past isn’t as distant as they thought. The investigation leads them from Vietnam to the heart of Los Angeles, revealing secrets that have long been buried. The stakes are high, and Canning maintains a sense of urgency and suspense.

The climax is particularly noteworthy. As an avid mystery reader, I take pride in my ability to spot twists coming. But I found myself caught off guard by the revelations in this one, a testament to the author’s skillful plotting and attention to detail.

For Your Benefit is a thrilling read that combines the best elements of detective fiction with a profound exploration of its characters’ psyches—a masterful blend of humor, suspense, and emotional depth. If you’re looking for a satisfying mystery in a deeply human story, you’ve found it.

Buy from Amazon

Buy from Bookshop

Thank you for reading Melissa Suggitt’s book review of For Your Benefit by Patrick Canning!
