After the loss of his mother months earlier, his father promises to take him on a trip to visit ERE IMMENSUS Inc, the headquarters of a space exploration company.

The trip will change their lives forever. There, they meet the esteemed Killian Wells, the founder of IMMENSUS, along with his daughters. What was supposed to be a quick and standard tour turns into the trip of a lifetime when Brian and his father Adio extend their vacation and open their minds to the possibility of a brighter future.

I haven’t read such a captivating first chapter in too long. Author Vincent Piana doesn’t waste a single moment in this opener, and we immediately care about Brian and Adio deeply. I would have read about them doing the most mundane things all the way to the end if I had to. I felt for them and their situation greatly. But Piana doesn’t stick to the mundane. The high-tech twists and turns are just the right kind of satisfying for these characters.

Immensus is a a deep, emotion-driven sci-fi novel that tugs at the heartstrings as much as it keeps them guessing. There’s enough action and sci-fi elements to entertain the loyalest action sci-fi fans, but there’s also a spectacularly human feel to the relationships.

With Brian and Adio both having suffered such a tremendous loss, I was worried for how they would fare emotionally. Just like Adio is wary of the intentions of rich people, I too was concerned with how well Killian and his crew would take care of Brian once he was in their care.

Killian’s daughters, specifically Electra, quickly quieted my concerns with her sincerity and compassion. Though the other younger characters are largely isolated from the rest of the world, they take to their new peer and give him the sense of community that he didn’t have in Chicago.

Technology and space are the focal points of this book. The workers and students of IMMENSUS handle exclusive access to things like robotics, mining on different planets, and exploring the universe in a way that no other company has been capable of so far. But with such valuable assets and information also comes a few envious villains lurking about.

The story takes a stark turn as we learn that there are politicians and crooked government agencies willing to stop at nothing to take them down and have the world perceive them as a threat. As the children and families working with IMMENSUS go on the defensive, evil rears its ugly head to try to take everything they’ve worked toward. Battles are had, lives are lost, and science could come out on top.

With the promise of a second installment (and my jaw still on the floor after all that’s happened ), Piana has set the stage for a bright reading future.

Amazon

Thank you for reading Jaylynn Korrell’s book review of Immensus by Vincent Piana!
