He meets his neighbor Mr. Guster\u2019s big yellow dog, Max. Noel wants to play by jumping on Max\u2019s back, but he is quickly rebuffed. Next, Noel meets two Siamese cats named Lucy and Lizzie. They aren\u2019t interested at all and \u201cswatted and hissed at Noel.\u201d Noel keeps trying to find an animal buddy, but neither the Pug nor the \u201cblack and white \u2018kitty\u2019 hiding under the bushes\u201d seem likely prospects. (\u201cNaughty Noel, no, no, no! That skunk is never going to be your friend!\u201d) When Noel comes to the rescue of an injured hound, things change. Anyone who has had a misbehaving pet will relate to Noel and his antics. Page\u2019s descriptive language adds depth and specificity to the story (Grandma Patsy lives in \u201ca little house with rosy pink shutters, nestled in a grove of palms and mossy oak trees\u201d).
