Some push us to question what we would sacrifice for the people we love. Some do both. Badge on Fire leans fully into this tension and delivers a satisfying suspense thriller built on action and adrenaline. But beneath the surface, it’s a story about grief, duty, and the cost of living two very separate lives at once.

At the center of this action-packed novel is Jack Singer, a Berkeley firefighter who carries more weight than most people see. By day, he’s the steady, reliable, and well-respected captain and leader of Fire Station #5. But at night, he steps into an even more dangerous role: an undercover, off-the-book CIA agent working to dismantle the Sangre Cartel. It doesn’t take long for his secret mission to spin into something more personal and vengeful as Jack makes connection between the cartel and his wife’s death.

“But remember, Jack—once you step into this world, there’s no going back. You’ll be walking a fine line, balancing normal life with a dangerous one. And if you slip, it’s not just you who pays the price.”

Badge on Fire spares no detail on the emotional and psychological toll the double life takes on Jack. His character isn’t the perfect hero or merciless vigilante who doesn’t care about those who get in the crossfire (even though there are). Author Daniel Green makes Jack feel human and conflicted, constantly aware of the consequences of his choices and actions. His loyalty to his daughter Ellie remains a grounding anchor of his life through the whole ordeal as their relationship struggles and evolves.

Badge on Fire This is a fast and cinematic novel filled with fire rescues, cartel operations, police investigations, and near death escapes; these all unfold with an energy that keeps the novel engaging and full of life.

The camaraderie among the firefighters of Fire Station #5 adds warmth and a nice feel of community to the story as well. They all care deeply for each other, especially Abe, in and outside of the fire. As you might expect from a novel with a firefighting leading man, fire is a strong theme—not only as a literal danger but as a symbol that runs adjacent to Jack’s journey. It reflects the chaos he steps into at night, the pressure he faces during the day, and the parts of his life that feel like they’re burning out of his control.

“He made a career of fighting fires, but now the flames were closing in on all sides. He had to figure this out before everything burned to the ground.”

Badge on Fire is a compelling start to what feels like a larger arc, and it leaves us with a satisfying twist at the end to make us anxious for where we could go from here. It’s a fast, tense, and emotionally charged novel that blends conspiracies, crimes, secret operations, suspense, and courage—an exciting read for crime mystery lovers.

The post Badge on Fire by Daniel Green appeared first on Independent Book Review.

A firefighter struggles with the weight of his secret double life when it threatens the people he loves most Some stories challenge our sense of justice.
