Intriguing from the onset with the investigation into the suspicious death of a journalist, the narrative holds this interest through its journey down the rabbit hole.

The body of investigative journalist Davy Clough is found in the bathtub of his hotel room, his wrists slashed in multiple places, leaving a blood-drenched scene for the authorities to comb for clues. But the local sheriff appears more interested in making a pass at the shell-shocked maid than in investigating Davy Clough’s demise. The indifference shown by the sheriff stands in stark contrast to Clough’s mother upon hearing of her son’s demise. When Cynthia Clough receives the death notice from the county Medical Examiner, she immediately suspects foul play in Davy’s death.

FBI Agent Michael Saville met Davy Clough within the past week as the intrepid journalist approached Saville and his boss with allegations of an elaborate conspiracy with tentacles reaching to the highest levels of power. Saville had put little credence into Clough’s theories but also believed Clough wasn’t a random crackpot. The suddenness of his death, along with the local authorities’ willingness to write it off as a suicide, leaves Saville bothered enough to begin his own investigation.

Park Police Sergeant Lowri Pritchard believes a second body found in the park is just one lost soul. But when the body is identified as Victor Farnsworth, counsel to the President of the United States, she has some suspicions. Her boss advises her to drop the case as the investigating officer concludes Farnsworth’s death was from his own hands. When she interviews Farnsworth’s widow, however, she learns about the behind-the-scenes world of a Beltway couple and how Farnsworth was involved with the First Lady.

The two deaths are seemingly unrelated, yet the link between both investigations involves something far more sinister than Saville or Pritchard could believe.

The Judas Saints is a suspense-filled and fulfilling novel that harkens back to the conspiracy-obsessed culture of The X-Files, Conspiracy Theory, and books such as The Octopus (Keith & Thomas, 1996). Author Keith M. Spence artfully uses real-life events involving suspicious and high-profile deaths, covert operations, and the Machiavellian scheming of politicians to propel this fascinating story forward.

The authenticity of the story lies within the genuine curiosity of the investigators, their inclination to disregard the rules to unearth the truth, and the barriers that are thrown to obstruct their mission. FBI Agent Saville and Park Police Sergeant Pritchard represent the truth seekers, and their quest to untangle the conspiracy amidst a steadily increasing amount of danger is written with a keen grasp on what the genre wants.

The Judas Saints is a shining work of political thriller fiction, giving you exactly what you came for—and then some.

The post The Judas Saints by Keith M.
