It’s locked at all times. Because when the trunk opens, people around Adelaide start to disappear. The year is 1915, and Adelaide is in trouble. Her secret sin killed her parents, forcing her to flee California in a hellfire rush and make her way to Montana as a homesteader. Dragging the trunk with her at every stop, she will become one of the “lone women” taking advantage of the government’s offer of free land for those who can tame it—except that Adelaide isn’t alone. And the secret she’s tried so desperately to lock away might be the only thing that will help her survive the harsh territory.

I always expect to learn something new from a historical fiction novel, and this one delivered. Information about the lone women homesteaders wasn’t something that was taught in any of my classes, making this novel a good fit to read. I enjoyed most of the characters in this book. There are also a fair number of characters who are unlikeable, and I enjoyed booing and hissing at them. This book also had me reflecting on who the real monsters were in this book. I found this book to be creepy, dark, atmospheric and oh so good! This book played out like a movie in my mind. The descriptions were lush, vivid and set the mood of this book. I would not be surprised if this book was made into a movie.

I rated this novel a solid four stars. Honestly, for the first 70% I just kept reading to find out what was in the trunk, but even after the unexpected reveal, I was compelled to finish. What an emotional ending! Highly recommended for those who like reading books that cannot be tied down to any single genre.

The post Lone Women by Victor LaValle appeared first on Book Nook Buzz.

Lone Women by Victor LaValle on February 6, 2024 Genres: Fiction / Fantasy / Historical, Fiction / Horror / General, Fiction / Literary Pages: 304 Format: Hardcover Buy on Amazon Goodreads Adelaide Henry carries an enormous steamer trunk with her wherever she goes.
