When Bosner and his fellow sailors discover that two of their crew are moving into a house on Cape Henry Avenue, it seems like the perfect escape from cramped barracks life. What follows is three weeks of escalating debauchery involving keg stands, beer pong tournaments, a disastrous food run, and even an impromptu strip club in the living room. But beneath this chaos, is the true story of Cape Henry House<\/em>, which is about something more universal: young people trying to figure out who they are while their twenties slip through their fingers like spilled beer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Author Jolly Walker Bittick nails the authenticity of this setting. The Navy details are precise: the grueling night shifts, the constant smell of jet fuel and hydraulic fluid, the hierarchy of ranks, and the peculiar institution of \u201cThe Rat,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> a shop-floor fight club where disagreements are settled with grappling matches witnessed by cheering shipmates. The barracks, the hangar, and especially the titular house feel lived-in and real.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The dialogue flows with the kind of easy, insult-laden banter that defines close male friendships. Such as when B-man tells Bosner \u201cBro, I could put Bomber or Tee against you,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> or Dolvar dismisses someone with \u201cAhight clowns.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Dialogue like this makes their friendship feel believable and relaxed. The running gag of Bosner never learning \u201cMs. Highlights\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/strong> actual name is genuinely funny, as is the legendary \u201cMission: Three Beers Standing\u201d<\/em><\/strong> escapade, where Bosner and Sammy cut through yards, get chased by dogs, and return to the party with nothing but empty bags and three miraculously intact bottles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Where the book struggles a bit is in its character development, particularly its women. Melissa seems to exist largely as a catalyst for conflict, and her motivations are reduced to jealous instability. She shows up at the party, kisses Bosner without consent, and when rejected, attacks B-man and instigates a brawl. Anne Penley is the perpetually angry wife and even Lorrie, the most sympathetic female character, serves mostly as B-man\u2019s eventual romantic payoff. The male characters, by contrast, are given quirks and backstories: Zick\u2019s mechanical genius, Dolvar\u2019s terrifying drinking capacity, Thayer\u2019s obsessive relationship with food. The narrative may also rely a bit too heavily on Bosner blacking out, thus skipping difficult scenes, and sensory details are too often skipped over even in places where they could have brought parties and scenes to vivid life.<\/p>\n

Cape Henry House<\/em> succeeds as a time capsule though. The 2008 setting with flip phones, CDs, the Giants\u2019 improbable Super Bowl run grounds the story in a specific moment before smartphones and social media changed how young people connect. And for readers who\u2019ve served, or who simply remember their own reckless twenties, there\u2019s something undeniably appealing about this portrait of a crew bound together by shared chaos. As readers, we can\u2019t help but hope for hope, a moment of optimism that suggests maybe, just maybe, Bosner could figure things out.<\/p>\n

An engaging debut that captures the camaraderie and chaos of young military life with humor and authenticity. The parties are wild and the friendships are genuine in Cape Henry House<\/em> by Jolly Walker Bittick.<\/p>\n
