Fast-paced and entertaining, the novel invites young readers to explore a fascinating piece of history while immersing themselves in the rich culture, landscapes, and traditions of the Philippines.

“And deep beneath the seminary, in cold tunnels lined with stone, the treasure waited.”

The story follows Samir, his sister Riley, and their friends Ava and Jonah as they travel to the Philippines with their families. What begins as a vacation filled with beaches, mango treats, and sightseeing quickly transforms into a search for the legendary Yamashita’s Gold, a rumored treasure hidden during World War II.

Armed with clues from a family journal and aided by their tricked-out, Nintendo Switch-operated drone, lovingly named “Sky Fang,” the children find themselves dodging pirates, navigating dangerous obstacles, and uncovering secrets that extend far beyond gold. Lewis always keeps the plot moving.

“My father once told me: If you find treasure and want to keep it, be strong enough to defend it. If not–bury it again, and stay silent.”

While the children’s point of view drives much of the action, Lewis also gives readers glimpses into the thoughts and motivations of the parents and even the pirates pursuing the treasure. These shifting perspectives create suspense but more importantly generates much of the book’s humor. It is especially entertaining to watch the parents mirror the sneaky hijinks of their children as they pursue secret agendas of their own.

The young protagonists are clever and resourceful, yet they remain believably childlike in their dreams of using treasure to fund homework-completing robots and jetpacks. Beneath the adventure, however, the story’s most satisfying moments come from the simple joys the characters share of exploring the Philippines, enjoying its food and culture, and building memories with one another. Lewis’s vivid descriptions of the country’s landscapes, history, and cuisine make the setting an essential part of the adventure.

“Upstairs, the kids held a secret meeting in the unofficial war room—Sam’s room, floor covered in snack wrappers and adventure gear.”

The novel’s brevity occasionally leaves some of its most riveting elements feeling under-explored. The multiple perspectives are intriguing, but they also introduce numerous character motivations and storylines that must compete for limited space. Additional development of the parents’ roles and the pirates’ motivations may have further enriched the story, and so would have additional details of the history that inspired the adventure. While the fast pace is certainly part of the book’s appeal, some readers may wish for more time to explore the characters, the setting, and the historical context before racing toward the next discovery.

“To spontaneous family bonding and suspiciously smooth travel plans!”

The Hunt for Yamashita’s Gold is a fun and exciting middle grade novel that blends history, mystery, and action. Its vibrant Philippine setting, high-stakes treasure hunt, and themes of friendship and discovery make it something to enjoy. Readers who are drawn to mystery-solving and globe-trotting quests in the spirit of The 39 Clues or A to Z Mysteries will be satisfied with this one.

The post The Hunt for Yamashita’s Gold (Legends Unearthed) by Sutton Lewis appeared first on Independent Book Review.

A family vacation turns into a real-life treasure hunt in this action-packed middle grade mystery.
