She is, however, surprised to learn the land is even more magical than she once believed.

In addition to a telepathic cat, Arcadian Alcove is home to tiny mythical creatures called fae and a plethora of other species, like elves and nymphs. Lia learns she is one of the guardians of the land, and it is her job, along with her husband Eric and her newly orphaned nephew Michael to keep it safe. This also means the three of them can talk to animals and fantastical creatures.

Just when Lia is starting to feel settled into her new and enchanted life, the governor of North Carolina, a greedy man named Gregory, enters the picture. He is contesting the ownership of the land to make way for a highway, one that will earn him plenty of money once his brother builds a tourist center on the property. Now Lia, Eric, and Michael must hurry to work with the fae and the animals on the land to save it from development.

Black has built a truly lovable fantasy world here, with enough realism mixed in to make it easy for those just tiptoeing into the genre and with just enough nuance for those already immersed in fantasy fiction. The fae are delightful creatures, with the talkative Heidi being particularly entertaining, especially when she is hopped up on sugar from so many of the cookies Lia bakes. It’s touching to have a happy couple at the center of the story too, as Lia and Eric support one another constantly. Though it’s not exactly a romance, it surely features love.

While most of the characters are goodhearted creatures, Gregory is about as unpleasant as can be. It’s easy to root for Lia and her friends simply from their good cause and their likable characteristics, but Gregory is a total sleaze-ball, a character who’s about as easy to root against as you can think of. Readers will cheer for all the ways these tiny, tenacious fae work to defeat him.

Lia’s nephew Michael has a heart-wrenching backstory, but his story ends up being a bit more of a challenge to connect with. The reader sees him lose his parents in a traumatic way, but he never really seems to process or fully grieve this loss. The story isn’t about this exactly but more so about his magical connection to things outside of his known world, but he recovers so quickly that his drive and three-dimensionality gets lost along the way.

Arcadian Alcove is a sweet, easily recommendable fantasy for those looking to escape the troubles of this world and enter one where hope, kindness, and magic win out.

The post Arcadian Alcove by Karen Black appeared first on Independent Book Review.

A greedy politician, a woman fighting for her family’s land—a charming fantasy about saving the magical creatures who call this place home. When Lia’s Aunt Melissa passes away, she is not surprised to learn she has inherited the family home they have lived on for generations.
