The book sets out to braid Lovac’s search for answers with Sophie’s fight to survive and to use both threads to expose how deep the Third Estate’s reach runs inside the Guild itself.

The funeral opens with an ambush. Shorty Jensen, one of Lovac’s oldest acquaintances, pulls a gun on him mid-service, and the skirmish that follows reveals that half the mourners are armed operatives who calmly return their weapons to a collection box once the shooting stops.

From there, Lovac tracks a coded message Manning left behind, hunts down a vanished associate, and crosses paths with Sophie, who watched the associate die and unknowingly holds a piece of the puzzle Lovac needs. The two form an uneasy partnership and break into Sophie’s own hospital to retrieve evidence before the Third Estate’s agents get there first.

Lovac’s point of view is a true highlight here. His clipped internal monologue turns ordinary rooms into tactical grids: “Two guards at the back exit… No cameras or video surveillance… One exit to their left. One person in the shadows, or three?” That habit of counting exits and cataloging threats gives the character a consistent, distinctive voice through every chapter. The funeral ambush earns its length by using the setting itself, since mourners hand weapons to an usher before the service and reclaim them, hatchets and poisoned darts included, once the shooting starts. Sophie succeeds as a foil to Lovac’s control. She sorts M&Ms by color while decoding a cipher and asks a superior officer for a donut in the middle of an interrogation. These small habits give her a nervous, specific personality that carries through her scenes.

The prose leans on brand names to signal wealth and status. A Belle & Bloom cape, Jimmy Choo pumps, an Elie Tahari blazer, and a Marineta top-grain leather sofa on an Isfahan Persian rug all appear within a handful of chapters. These details sometimes slow scenes that otherwise move at a sprint, and they crowd out other forms of characterization the author already handles well elsewhere. The opening fifty pages also introduce a dense roster of factions at once: the Assassins Guild, the Third Estate, AMCC, and a long list of named operatives all compete for the reader’s attention before any of them earn full context. That density asks a lot of trust early on, before the stakes have fully landed.

Devil’s Tango delivers a propulsive plot built on hand-to-hand combat, code-breaking, and a slow thaw between two guarded characters. Readers will be satisfied with this conspiracy thriller with a high body count. And the ending sets up a sequel with real momentum for those who like to stay within series.

The post Devil’s Tango (The Third Estate 2) by D.R.
