Lauria Kerr’s Paging Doctor Solomon is a hilarious, heartwarming anthropomorphic animal fantasy novel about a miniature dachshund with an enormous dream.

Solomon may be little enough to fit in your lap, but his ambitions are anything but small. Determined to become a doctor so he can help his mother, the person he loves most, he sets out on a delightfully absurd journey that celebrates the unconditional love dog owners know so well.

“Sure, I carried myself with all the bravado and strut of A Big Dog. All wiener dogs have to. How else did we become one of the most popular dogs in the world if not through bluffing?”

Inspired by his favorite medical drama television doctor, black-and-tan miniature dachshund Solomon enrolls in online medical school, convinced that earning his degree is the best way to prepare for his mother’s life-changing spinal surgery. Alongside his food-motivated brother Oliver and their confident, adopted Rough Collie brother Maestro, Solomon navigates online classes, stuffed-animal surgeries, awkward attempts at online dating, and increasingly outrageous adventures. From treating patients and traveling with royalty to supporting his mother’s rehabilitation, every challenge is filtered through Solomon’s unwavering optimism and larger-than-life confidence.

“The last few months of playing the dual role of sleepy dachshund by day and medical student at night had begun to take a toll.”

Much of the novel’s charm comes from Solomon’s first-person (or is it first-canine?) perspective. His dramatic narration, unwavering self-belief, and witty wordplay turn even ordinary situations into laugh-out-loud moments. From clever breed-based jokes to running gags about veterinary medicine and canine behavior, the comedy feels natural and consistently entertaining without overshadowing the more tender moments of the story. Structured as a series of episodic adventures, the novel feels like spending time with an eccentric friend whose stories somehow become less believable and more entertaining with every chapter.

“It’s not until we’re told the word ‘no’ that we find out what we’re truly capable of.”

The novel occasionally struggles to balance its playful tone. Because the dogs often think and behave with such childlike innocence, some of the more adult elements, particularly Solomon’s dating life, can feel slightly at odds with the rest of the story. While these moments are intended for comedy, they occasionally interrupt the wholesome atmosphere the novel works so hard to build. Despite these occasional tonal hiccups, Solomon, Oliver, and Maestro form an unforgettable trio whose devotion to one another gives even the most ridiculous moments genuine warmth.

“It is in those tender moments, when hearts are mended, that I am most proud to call myself a dog.”

Paging Doctor Solomon is a heartwarming, laugh-out-loud middle grade novel that celebrates family, resilience, and the special bond between people and their dogs. With its memorable cast, imaginative premise, and endless stream of canine humor, it offers an uplifting reading experience for upper middle grade readers and adults alike.

Fans of Air Bud, Because of Winn-Dixie, and The Jack Russell: Dog Detective series will appreciate its blend of comedy, adventure, and heartfelt emotion. Above all, anyone who has ever loved a dog is likely to find joy in Solomon’s unforgettable journey.

The post Paging Dr. Solomon by Lauria D.
