Not only has she lost a friend and almost her own life along with his, but her superiors need the situation labelled and filed. Meaning they need someone to blame. As the only survivor, the dubious credit goes to her. She’s still reeling from the double blow when she takes on another operation. Something small and safe that will get her back in the game. Or so she’s told.

Nothing is ever as easy as promised. The job turns out to be observing and reporting on a SWAT team as they close in on a trafficking operation. Except the base of operations is deep in the heart of the Louisiana bayou, a verifiable maze that changes its borders with the weather and goes on further than the eye can see. When the job goes bad, Jennifer realizes that there are secrets buried upon secrets out here and the only way out is to figure out who to trust.

On the Bayou is an action-adventure thriller with a killer setting and morally nuanced characters. This stand-alone novel packs some heavy elements of horror alongside its gritty neo-noir-like atmosphere. While Jennifer is the main character, the narrative flits between a few different perspectives. The writing is strong, and it feels like you’re watching a fast-paced crime drama unfold.

At the beginning, On the Bayou feels like a classic buddy cop adventure tale with a bit of a twist on the setting. There are all the major characters, the joker, the heavyweight, the savvy one and of course, Jennifer, the newcomer. It’s one of those stories that’s easy to get on board with because the dynamic is so enjoyable. While the main arc centers on Jennifer, this is more of an elite team caught out of their element against a more terrifying foe than they’d anticipated scenario.

As a DEA agent, Jennifer is initially the odd one out of the group, not trusted by the SWAT team. As the situation they’re in careens out of their control, no one has the option of being picky about allies. The only way they will survive is by working together. As the team sinks deeper into danger, the feeling of the story alters drastically, getting steadily darker and bloodier.

This one really delivers on its bayou setting. The idea of alligator-infested waters amidst dense foliage is creepy enough as a concept, but On the Bayou amps that up tenfold. Throw in a family bent on vengeance, the Mexican cartel, and a townful of religious zealots, and the entire premise becomes a horror show of epic proportions.

So many terrible decisions are made by the protagonists in this story. Mistakes that rookie cops shouldn’t make. The moment trouble escalates, the team falls apart. Chain of command goes out the window, no plans are made, and no conversation is had about what they might be up against and how to combat it. There are times where it’s hard to root for the protagonists because they act like teenagers in a slasher film—blithely unaware of the danger until it’s upon them and with no defense against it save mindlessly bolting.

Outside of some questionable choices by the characters, there are a glut of phenomenal elements in On the Bayou. The enemies are terrifying, the interplay of characters is gripping, the setting is perfectly unique. The narrative plays with beloved tropes, expertly twisting them so they’re comfortably familiar and fresh at the same time.

The post On the Bayou by Sean Bridges appeared first on Independent Book Review.

An elite SWAT team finds more than they bargain for in the depths of a Louisiana bayou.
