What begins as an ordinary bike ride with her best friend, Bella, quickly becomes the day that changes Joy’s life forever. When Joy returns home, she finds police officers at the house and soon learns from her mother, Sharon, that her father has died.

The story introduces the people who surround Joy throughout her grief: her mother Sharon; her best friend Bella; her grandfather Papa; her extended family; and members of her church and school community. At its heart, the book explores grief from a child’s perspective and considers what children may need as they navigate the confusing journey of loss.

After learning of her father’s death, Joy is thrust into the unfamiliar world of funeral arrangements, condolences, and mourning. At the funeral, surrounded by family, she struggles to comprehend that her father is really gone. Her grief becomes even more difficult when ordinary life resumes, and everything seems to remind her of him.

Joy and Sharon must adjust to life without Steve. He was the cook in their family, and even everyday meals become reminders of his absence. They recall happy memories of him as a husband and father while trying to establish new routines. Holidays and family traditions become particularly difficult because they highlight the person who is no longer there.

Joy also wrestles with difficult questions about God, death, heaven, and whether she will ever see her father again. Her conversations with Pastor Winters allow her to explore these questions through the lens of her Christian faith.

As the story progresses, Joy learns that grief does not follow a straight path. She experiences sadness, anger, jealousy, confusion, and moments of happiness. Her mother, family, school counselor, pastor, and friends become part of her support system as she gradually learns how to live with her loss.

The book’s greatest strength is its portrayal of grief through a child’s eyes. Joy’s questions are simple but profound, and her emotions feel appropriately childlike. She can be devastated by her father’s death while simultaneously worrying about school, friendships, food, and everyday routines.

Sharon is also particularly well portrayed. She is trying to support Joy while grieving the loss of her husband herself. Her vulnerability makes her feel like a real mother rather than an idealized one.

Bella is another effective character because her friendship with Joy illustrates how difficult it can be for children to understand a friend’s grief. Bella still wants to ride bikes and have fun, while Joy feels changed by her father’s death. Joy even experiences jealousy because Bella still has her father. That is an uncomfortable but remarkably honest portrayal of grief.

I also appreciated the journal Joy receives from her cousin, April. It becomes a practical way for her to preserve memories, express difficult emotions, and process her grief. The Scripture passages and quotations that conclude the chapters reinforce the themes and offer moments of hope.

The book’s theological discussions about God, heaven, death, and the afterlife are quite detailed. For Christian readers, this is likely one of its greatest strengths, as it gives children biblical language to confront difficult questions. The book is unapologetically rooted in a Christian worldview, and faith is central to Joy’s healing.

The book’s clear perspective makes it a particularly useful resource for Christian families, churches, counselors, and parents who want to use a story as a starting point for conversations about grief, faith, and hope.

Joy Overcame Sorrow’sgreatest strength is that it does not suggest grief simply disappears. Joy misses her father, becomes angry, asks difficult questions, struggles with changes in routine, and gradually learns that healing does not mean forgetting.

By the end, Joy understands that she will never stop grieving because she will never stop loving her father. Yet she can still experience peace, contentment, and joy again.

I’d gladly recommend this book to grieving children, parents, families, counselors, pastors, teachers, and anyone supporting a child through loss. Joy Overcame Sorrow offers a hopeful message: sorrow may change us, but it does not have to have the final word.

The post Joy Overcame Sorrow by Jerry L.
