Resuscitative and revitalizing—with wisdom on every page
J. Finn’s Emotional Intelligence Insights for Self Mastery offers a fresh perspective on the heart, mind, and commonalities of human experience. It tackles self-doubt, parenting, death, money, freedom, and so much more.
The book may cover a lot, but it’s done in a way that gets every point across without muddying the ideas together. The questions for contemplation at the end of each chapter also help bring home the nuanced point of each topic.
The writing is clear, cohesive, and even plays around with some fun allegories. Within each topic, such as “True Love,” there are smaller paragraphs that expand on subsidiary aspects, like self-love and commitment. Even while covering tried and true ideas, Emotional Intelligence does so in an inspired, fresh way that invigorates. This book is comforting, yet motivating—crafted to welcome the reader into their next best self.
If you couldn’t tell already, I love how this book operates. Regardless of if the advice fits your current situation, the book is calm and meditative, even when discussing heavy topics like death. “Death is a spring cleaning of the soul, a critical piece of the puzzle of Life, and we may venture to guess you do indeed enjoy the feeling of being reborn.”
Emotional Intelligence emphasizes that rebirth is not just a religious concept, but that transmigration can happen at any time during a person’s life when they choose to start anew. That framework is the heart of this text and serves to empower those reading it to be free.
Oftentimes, a self-help book is only as good as its practical application. Luckily, this book does both well—the inspiration and the practicality. The exercises are particularly effective. In the Freedom Breath exercise, for example, the instructions are simple and short and helped me feel more in tune with the present. Each exercise typically has a paragraph that explains the intended result and the importance of adding it to one’s day. Even with all of the amazing advice and discernment, there is always a reminder that it’s ok to fail and try again. Emotional Intelligence is about examining what makes us human and how to cultivate it rather than push impossibly for perfection.
Emotional Intelligence would be an excellent read for philosophical and psychology readers interested in self-improvement. It has the capacity to spark real, genuine change in the readers who are ready to listen.
