Freida McFadden does it again. The Tenant is a high-stakes, anxiety-inducing psychological thriller that grabs you from the first page and refuses to let go. Just when you think you know where the story is going—think again. McFadden proves once more why she’s the queen of twists.
The story begins with Blake Porter, a rising VP of marketing who’s riding high until everything crashes down in a matter of days. Accused of corporate sabotage and abruptly fired, he’s left scrambling to keep his dream brownstone and the life he built with his fiancée, Kristin. Desperate for cash, they decide to rent out a room in their home.
Then they meet Whitney…she’s beautiful, down-to-earth, and seems like the perfect fit. At first, everything seems fine, but it doesn’t take long for Blake to start noticing little things that feel… off. They start having weird little arguments over things like cereal and shampoo (which only he uses), and then it quickly escalates—loud thumping noises in the middle of the night, strange smells in the kitchen that won’t go away, and an overall vibe that something just isn’t right. Blake tries to talk to Kristin about it, but she brushes it off and actually seems to like Whitney. Meanwhile, Blake starts to feel like he’s losing his grip—and he might lose more than just the house if things keep going the way they are.
This book was pure tension from start to finish. The slow build of unease, paired with entertaining early moments like the roommate interviews, created a deliciously deceptive calm before the storm. Once things started to unravel, I was completely hooked. I needed to know what was really going on. And that ending? Let’s just say I should’ve known better. McFadden doesn’t hold back, and she got me—again!!
The Tenant is the kind of thriller that demands to be read in one sitting. Cancel your plans, clear your schedule, and prepare to be shocked. If you think you’ve got it figured out… you don’t.
