Inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lost Story blends magical realism, mystery, and a hint of romance to explore trauma, memory, and second chances. The story centers on Jeremy and Rafe, two boys who vanished in the Red Crow State Park as teens and returned six months later—healthier, stronger, and with no memory of where they’d been. Fifteen years later, a determined young woman named Emilie seeks their help to find her missing sister in the same forest, setting off a journey that forces Jeremy and Rafe to face the truth about their past.

There are intriguing elements here—hidden realms, repressed memories, emotional wounds—but for me, the pacing felt slow for much of the book. I didn’t feel fully hooked until the final third, where things picked up and the emotional stakes became more engaging. I did enjoy the blend of fairytale and realism, and watching the dynamic between the three main characters evolve, especially as Rafe and Jeremy begin to recover what they lost, both literally and emotionally.

While I appreciated the concept, I preferred Meg Shaffer’s The Wishing Game overall. This one was okay for me—worth reading for fans of gentle magical realism and found-family stories, but not as captivating as I hoped.
