Story of My Life is classic Lucy Score—a slow-burn romance with quirky small-town charm, laugh-out-loud moments, and just enough emotional depth to tug at your heart. If you’re a fan of Gilmore Girls or Schitt’s Creek, you’ll feel right at home in Story Lake, PA.
Hazel Hart is a romance novelist in crisis. After a brutal breakup and a bad case of writer’s block, she flees New York and buys a historic (read: crumbling) home in a tiny town she’s never been to. What she finds is a house full of raccoons, a seat on the town council, and a grumpy, flannel-clad contractor named Campbell Bishop who unexpectedly sparks her creativity—and maybe something more.
This is a grumpy-sunshine romance (which isn’t usually my favorite trope), but Score totally won me over. Hazel’s chaotic, determined energy plays perfectly off of Cam’s reserved, gruff demeanor, and the town’s lovable cast of characters only adds to the fun. There’s small-town hijinks, sibling drama, and a little fake dating thrown in for good measure.
Like all of Lucy Score’s books, this one will sneak up on you. You think you’re just reading a few chapters, and suddenly you’re three-quarters through, totally invested in these characters and this offbeat little town. It’s funny, heartwarming, and carries a great “get back on your feet” vibe that makes it both comforting and uplifting.
Whether you’re a longtime Lucy Score fan or new to her writing, Story of My Life is a feel-good romcom worth adding to your list—especially if you love your romance with a side of sarcasm, small-town chaos, and slow-burn charm.
