Discovered through the Modern Mrs. Darcy Summer Reading Guide, The Phoenix Pencil Company turned out to be one of those rare books that quietly surprises you—layered, imaginative, and deeply heartfelt. Allison King’s debut is a moving blend of historical fiction and magical realism, grounded in themes of memory, connection, and the stories we inherit.
The novel follows Monica Tsai, a college freshman and self-described recluse who prefers coding and journaling to socializing. Deeply devoted to her aging grandparents—especially her grandmother Yun, whose past is shrouded in mystery—Monica finds herself drawn into a family history she never expected. When a stranger connects with her online and sends her a pencil that unlocks memories from the past, Monica begins to uncover long-lost family secrets that trace back to 1940s Shanghai, where Yun and her cousin Meng once worked at the Phoenix Pencil Company.
The story unfolds in dual timelines, a structure that works beautifully here. While Monica’s modern-day journey kept me turning the pages, it was the depth of her grandmother’s story—and the magical concept of Reforging pencils to relive memories—that gave the novel its emotional resonance. The pencils serve as a powerful metaphor for legacy and healing, and the idea that words can be both tools and lifelines.
This is a story that explores how the past informs the present, and how unspoken truths can shape the lives of future generations. I was particularly struck by how Monica’s desire to understand her roots becomes the key to unlocking her own sense of identity and direction.
Rich with atmosphere, emotion, and just the right amount of magic, The Phoenix Pencil Company is both imaginative and profound. It would make a fantastic book club pick—there’s so much to unpack about memory, family, identity, and the stories that shape us.
Highly recommended for readers who enjoy multigenerational narratives with a touch of the fantastical. This one is a gem I’m so glad I picked up.
