In A Killing Cold, Kate Alice Marshall (bestselling author of What Lies in the Woods) delivers a chilling, twisty thriller about family secrets, buried memories, and survival.

When Theodora Scott meets Connor Dalton, their romance feels like a whirlwind dream. Six months later, he invites her to Idlewood, his wealthy family’s secluded winter retreat, in hopes of winning over his powerful but skeptical relatives. But from the moment Theo arrives, something feels off. Anonymous warnings tell her to stay away from Connor, footprints appear outside her window, and then she makes a startling discovery: a childhood photo of herself—taken at Idlewood, long before she remembers ever being there.

As fragments of her past resurface, Theo realizes someone in the Dalton family is hiding a terrible secret, one they’ll go to dangerous lengths to protect. And in a family where power is everything, uncovering the truth may cost her more than she ever imagined.

This book is the definition of a curl up in a sweater and stay up all night reading kind of thriller. I listened to it on audio and absolutely devoured it. The atmosphere of Idlewood was so vividly drawn that I could practically feel the icy air seeping through the cabin walls, adding to the sense of isolation and unease.

The pacing was sharp and fast, pulling me right into the mystery. Every member of the Dalton family is exactly as chaotic and dysfunctional as you’d expect from a wealthy clan holed up in their remote estate. I found myself wanting to trust certain characters, but Kate Alice Marshall quickly reminded me that nobody in this family comes without their secrets. That constant push and pull kept me hooked.

I especially enjoyed rooting for Teddy and Connor, and I loved the moments when Connor’s sister stepped up to support Teddy—it added an unexpected warmth amid the cold and suspicion. Honestly, the whole story felt a bit like watching a reality TV drama, only with murder and long-buried family secrets at the core.

Marshall’s writing style is immersive and cinematic, making it easy to lose track of time while listening. The story flew by, and by the end, I knew I’d be picking up more of her books. For me, A Killing Cold was a solid, engaging 4-star read.
