Mazey Eddings takes the well-worn second chance romance trope and gives it a refreshing, witty spin in Well, Actually.
Eva Kitt never imagined she’d be stuck hosting Sausage Talk, interviewing D-list celebrities while holding lukewarm hot dogs, instead of pursuing the serious journalism career she once dreamed of. But her life takes an unexpected turn when an on-air rant about her college ex goes viral. That ex? None other than Rylie Cooper—now a beloved podcaster and social media personality who has built his career teaching men how to dismantle toxic masculinity and be better partners.
When Rylie suggests a deal—taking Eva on a series of dates to show he’s changed, with the whole thing broadcast to his audience—Eva sees an opportunity. She’s determined to expose him as a fraud and use the platform to boost her own career. But as the lines between performance and reality blur, Eva starts to wonder whether the boy who once broke her heart might actually be the man who can heal it.
What makes this story so fun is the dynamic between Eva and Rylie. Eva is sarcastic, sharp, and unapologetically skeptical, while Rylie is earnest, sweet, and eager to prove himself. Their banter crackles with comedic energy, and watching their staged disaster-dates slowly turn into something authentic is both entertaining and heartwarming.
Second chance romances are often hit or miss for me, but this one worked. I loved the absurd premise of Eva’s hot dog talk show—it gave the book a quirky edge while also highlighting Eva’s determination to make the best of a less-than-ideal job. Her viral rant felt so true to her character, and Rylie’s insistence on redemption kept the tension high. Together, they’re a recipe for chaos, but also for genuine growth and connection.
Overall, Well, Actually is an engaging, funny, and surprisingly sweet romance that plays with familiar tropes while delivering a story full of charm and heart.
