Party of Two is another charming romance from Jasmine Guillory that blends humor, heart, and thoughtful discussions of politics and race into a modern love story.

The book follows Olivia Monroe, a sharp and ambitious attorney who has just moved to Los Angeles to start her own law firm. Dating is the last thing on her mind—until she finds herself flirting all night with a stranger at a hotel bar, only to discover he’s none other than Max Powell, a junior senator with plenty of charm and plenty of baggage. Olivia has no interest in the spotlight that comes with dating a politician, but when Max sends her a chocolate cake with the sweetest message, she can’t resist seeing where things might go.

I loved Olivia as a main character—she’s confident, witty, and knows what she wants (often cake, which I adored as a running thread). The chemistry between Olivia and Max is undeniable, and Guillory does a fantastic job of showing how they’re not just attracted to each other but genuinely a good match. Their banter is fun, their secret dates are playful, and when the relationship goes public, the story digs into the challenges of love under scrutiny.

What stood out most for me was the on-page discussion of race and politics, which added depth and realism to the romance. I also appreciated how mature and sensitive the relationship development felt—this isn’t just a fluffy rom-com, but a story about two people navigating the real complications of their lives and careers while trying to make love work.

I both listened to the audiobook and read the physical copy, and honestly, I enjoyed them both—it’s hard to say which I’d recommend more. Guillory’s writing always shines through with characters that feel relatable and authentic. Party of Two gave me all the feels, and while it’s a typical Guillory romance in the best way, it still felt fresh and fun.

If you’re looking for a contemporary romance that’s thoughtful yet lighthearted, filled with sweet moments, sharp dialogue, and a heroine you can root for, Party of Two is a delightful pick.
