Mary is a quiet, middle-aged woman doing her best to blend into the background. Unremarkable. Invisible. Unknown even to herself. But lately, things have been changing inside Mary. Along with the hot flashes and body aches, she can’t look in a mirror without passing out, and the voices in her head have been urging her to do unspeakable things. Fired from her job in New York, she moves back to her hometown, hoping to reconnect with her past and inner self. Instead, visions of terrifying, mutilated specters overwhelm her with increasing regularity and she begins auto-writing strange thoughts and phrases. Mary discovers that these experiences are echoes of an infamous serial killer.
Then the killings begin again.
Mary’s definitely going to find herself.

The story had a few too many things going on, like the author was juggling numerous concepts and couldn’t keep them all in the air so one or two had to be dropped for the sake of keeping the rest moving. The tone switched a lot. It happens in horror, but for some reason in this book it didn’t work for me. The visceral horror was good, but the other supernatural stuff came across as too cutesy to fit in here. It lessened the impact of the core story.

I rated this novel three stars. I really wanted to love this book. The premise is super intriguing, and there were parts that totally pulled me and had me laughing out loud. But overall, it dragged a bit for me, and I found myself losing interest at times.
