Freida McFadden—queen of twisty, pulse-pounding psychological thrillers—is back with another tense and claustrophobic story in The Intruder.
When Casey retreats to her remote cabin in the wilderness, the last thing she expects is a hurricane. As the storm rages outside, the power flickers and the trees bend under the wind’s fury—but the real danger comes knocking when Casey spots a young girl outside her kitchen window, soaked, trembling, and covered in blood.
The girl refuses to explain who she is or where she came from—and she won’t let go of the knife clutched in her hand. As the night unfolds and Casey uncovers disturbing clues about her unexpected visitor, she begins to realize the storm outside may be nothing compared to the one inside her cabin.
In true McFadden fashion, The Intruder is a taut, psychological game of survival where no one is quite who they seem and every page leaves you second-guessing what you know.
My Thoughts
This was a classic Freida McFadden read—fast-paced, twisty, and full of suspicion. It’s told in that trademark style that keeps you constantly questioning everyone and everything.
I actually found this one to be more intense and claustrophobic than some of her other books, maybe because the story involves a young girl whose role is impossible to pin down. The tension of not knowing whether she was in danger or the danger kept me on edge the entire time.
McFadden’s ability to build unease with small, creeping details shines here. The isolated setting, the howling storm, and the psychological tug-of-war between Casey and the girl all combine to create a story that feels both intimate and terrifying.
By the time the final twist hit, I was both shocked and impressed—exactly what I expect (and love) from McFadden.
If you like thrillers that mess with your head, make you distrust every character, and keep your heart pounding until the last page, The Intruder will definitely deliver.
