After falling in love with Lyla Sage’s Rebel Blue Ranch series, I went into Soul Searching with some pretty high expectations—and while I enjoyed it overall, it didn’t completely live up to the magic I was hoping for.
The story follows Collins Cartwright, a woman reluctantly returning home to Sweetwater Peak, Wyoming, after losing her job and finding herself a little lost—emotionally, financially, and spiritually. Her hometown holds bittersweet memories and, as it turns out, more than a few ghosts. When she rents a room from Brady Cooper, the town’s new upholsterer who’s also running from his own past, Collins discovers that the space (and maybe her heart) isn’t as empty as she thought.
The setup is fantastic—a small-town romance with paranormal flair and the cozy-meets-creepy vibes perfect for spooky season. I loved the concept of ghosts acting as unseen matchmakers and the way the story blends second chances, healing, and supernatural charm. However, the pacing dragged a bit in the middle, and some of the characters felt flatter than I expected from Sage. After the emotional depth and chemistry of Rebel Blue Ranch, I wanted just a little more spark here—especially for a book about people haunted by their pasts (and literal ghosts!).
That said, the ending definitely brought things back to life—both the romance and the spice heated up nicely, and I finished the book feeling satisfied. The ghostly touches and slow-burn connection between Collins and Brady were sweet, even if the plot didn’t quite haunt me the way I’d hoped.
Overall, Soul Searching is a cozy paranormal romance with heart and humor that’s perfect for fall reading, especially if you like a softer ghost story and small-town charm. It didn’t become a five-star favorite, but I still found plenty to enjoy and would absolutely read whatever Lyla Sage writes next.
