Merry Christmas, You Filthy Animal brings all of Meghan Quinn’s signature humor, hijinks, and heart to the second installment of her How My Neighbor Stole Christmas series. This time, the chaos centers on Atlas “Max” Maxheimer, who’s barely holding his family’s Christmas tree farm together when he’s literally knocked off his feet—by a bottle of soda, no less. Enter Betty, the new girl in town, bustling with holiday cheer and helping her uncle open a rival tree farm right next door. To Max, she’s clearly his festive nemesis; to Betty, he’s maybe just one sleigh short of a parade. And from there, the holiday madness only builds.
Quinn layers in all the seasonal delights—blizzards, stolen ornaments with surprisingly tragic backstories, and a small-town feud that gets delightfully out of hand. While I personally liked the first book in the series a bit more (the chapter-opening poems were such a charming touch!), this second book still delivers Quinn’s solid writing, trademark banter, and laugh-out-loud moments.
One of the highlights for me was getting Max’s story. The first half simmers with buildup while the spice hits hard in the back half, giving the romance a satisfying payoff. Betty, on the other hand, is written so well that I genuinely couldn’t decide at first whether I was supposed to dislike her or adopt her as my new festive bestie—and that’s part of the fun. Add in the narrator’s voice, which gives the story an extra sparkle, and it becomes an irresistibly entertaining holiday read.
This is not a book meant to be taken too seriously; it’s a humorous, warm, chaotic romp—perfect for getting into the festive mood. For me, it lands at a very merry 4.5 stars.
