What We Did to Survive by Megan Lally is the kind of thriller that crawls under your skin and refuses to let you relax.

After loving That’s Not My Name, I went into this one expecting similar vibes—and wow, did it deliver… and then crank the tension way up. A spring break trip to a gorgeous Mexican resort sounds like a dream, but once the story shifts to a private sailboat heading straight into stormy waters, the anxiety kicks in hard. Being stuck on a boat with no escape? Absolutely not. I was basically breathing into a paper bag the entire time.

This is one of those books where you’re yelling at the characters, questioning every decision, and wondering why they would do that—while also being completely unable to stop reading. The tension is relentless, and I’ll admit, I had to take a few breaks because it was that intense (though my personal boat-related trauma may have played a role).

And then there’s the twist. The kind that hits you out of nowhere and makes you say, How did I not see that coming?! Maybe some readers will guess it, but I was too busy stressing out and shouting at the pages to put the pieces together—and honestly, that made it even more fun.

If you love edge-of-your-seat thrillers that make your heart race, your palms sweat, and your brain spiral, What We Did to Survive is absolutely for you. Just maybe don’t read it before your next beach vacation.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the intense, anxiety-inducing eARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
