This one starts with a slow creep—but don’t let that fool you. Once it gets going, it absolutely explodes with twists and turns. This is a psychologically clever legal thriller that keeps you constantly second-guessing everything and everyone.
Leila Reynolds is thrown into her first murder case, defending a man she’s represented before—one she couldn’t save the first time. Now she’s been given a second chance to help Jack, who’s accused of murdering a judge. But the stakes are even higher this time because the prosecutor she’s up against? Her husband. Talk about complicated.
This story is told from multiple perspectives—mostly Leila and the mysterious Witness X—and I was obsessed with trying to figure out who Witness X was. Every time I thought I had it nailed, the story flipped everything on its head. I love a book that outsmarts me, and this one absolutely did.
The characters are brilliantly written in that you truly don’t know who to trust—or even who to like. Everyone feels a little suspect, and that tension carries through the entire book. My biggest takeaway? Trust. No. One.
And that ending… wow. It’s one of those endings you’re going to love, hate, and still somehow love anyway.
Once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what was really going on and whether anyone was telling the truth. This is hands-down one of the most addictive legal thrillers I’ve read this year.
Also—this is being adapted for season 2 of Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+, and I will absolutely be watching.
If you love twisty, character-driven legal thrillers where nothing is as it seems, this one is a must-read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Dutton, and Jo Murray for this twisty eARC.
