Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry

I know why I waited so long to read Shield of Sparrows… but WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?!

Oh right—because this is a trilogy, and I was trying to pace myself. Unfortunately, that plan completely failed because this ended up being one of my top reads of the year!

The fantasy and romance combination has absolutely hooked me lately, and this book delivered everything I wanted. The world-building, the danger, the tension, the twists—it all kept me turning pages long past when I should have gone to bed.

Odessa and the Guardian are unforgettable characters. Imagine being forced into an ancient magical marriage treaty in place of your sister, only to find yourself falling for your husband’s bodyguard. The setup alone had me invested, but the journey these characters take together was even better than I expected.

This is definitely a slow-burn romance, but the tension is worth every second. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic is chef’s kiss, and watching Odessa grow into her own power while refusing to be the person everyone expects her to be made her such an easy character to root for.

And the twists! I guessed a few of them, but that final reveal? I was so grateful book two was already available because there was absolutely no way I could have waited after that ending.

If you love enemies-to-lovers romance, epic journeys, high-stakes fantasy, and characters who challenge everything they’ve been told about themselves, you cannot miss this one.

Also, if you’re an audiobook listener, the GraphicAudio production was phenomenal and made the entire experience even more immersive.

Now I’m (maybe) patiently waiting for book three… and by “patiently,” I mean thinking about these characters every day until it’s released.
