I’ve read Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s previous two novels, so Lake Effect was an automatic pick for me—and it absolutely delivered the kind of layered family story I’ve come to expect from her.
Set between the late 1970s and the present, this novel explores love, desire, family secrets, and the lasting impact of the choices we make. If you’re a fan of family dramas filled with messy relationships and complex family dynamics, this is definitely one to add to your list.
What I loved most were the characters. They’re flawed, complicated, and incredibly human. One minute you’ll find yourself empathizing with them, and the next you’ll want to yell at them for the decisions they’re making. That’s what makes them feel so real, and long after I finished the book, I was still thinking about them.
I listened to Lake Effect on audio and really enjoyed that format. The narration brought the characters and their emotions to life, making it easy to get immersed in their story.
If you enjoy character-driven novels that examine the ripple effects of family decisions across generations, Lake Effect is well worth picking up.
