A riveting paranormal adventure fit for a spooky campfire tale
When Finn Garcia heads into the Twisted Pine Range to camp with his family and their friends, he doesn’t have high expectations. His parents, Dan and Maeve, have been fighting lately and his brother Matt has been getting increasingly meaner for the past few years. Being stuck with all of them in a place crawling with bugs and no AC seems like a recipe for disaster. At least Finn has Pepper, his calico cat that has bonded to him ever since he was found as a kitten.
Out in the woods, with strange eyes watching from the darkness, Finn is even more glad for Pepper’s company. With his family becoming increasingly erratic, and weird events starting to mirror the creepy campfire story Matt’s friend Maya told, Finn realizes that the threat of the woods is growing. If he and his family can’t find a way to work together, Finn may lose them for good.
The Twilight Walker is the third in the Guardian Cats series. While each of these books deals with paranormal events with a cat protector at the center of the story, they are all standalone novels with new characters, settings, and dangers. This spooky, paranormal adventure is a middle grade delight. Starting with this book could jumpstart your kids’ next favorite series.
Opening this book with the characters telling eerie campfire tales is an impeccable move, since the entire story could be told on a dark night under the starry sky by a roaring fire. It is a stellar blend of paranormal, horror, and adventure. Despite being for middle schoolers, the premise is deeply unsettling; it targets the one thing most people are terrified to lose: their families. The folklore roots of the fantasy elements give the story a sense of gravitas, and the genuinely human characters bring the adventure to life.
While Twilight Walker could easily just be a light paranormal mystery, it digs into the depths of family dynamics to create the heart of its story. The relationship between Finn, who is anxious, uncertain, and never feels as though he’s enough, and his brother Matt, the complete opposite, is strained from the outset. As the pressure sets in and their family begins to unravel, all that tension bubbles to the surface, culminating in a heart-wrenching finale.
Twilight Walker is a fantastic addition to the Guardian Cats series. The setting and lore sets the stage for a captivating journey while the family dynamics and interpersonal relationships give the story a beating, emotional heart. Spending time in these pages with Finn, Matt, and Pepper is a treat, and I can’t wait to see where Minnella takes the series next.
