Review: DJ Chronicles by John M. Foreman

Synopsis:

Johnny B thinks he has it all—glamour, celebrity friends, endless booze, mountains of cocaine, and a revolving door of strippers every night.

But Johnny B is a perfect example of what happens when a man loses himself chasing excess.

The story opens in 2008 as Johnny collapses in agony on the floor of the club where he works. Rushed to the hospital, he needs immediate surgery—just as soon as the drugs and alcohol clear his system.

Then the story flashes back to the mid-1990s.

Johnny B is the hottest DJ in Los Angeles, working at CG’s, one of the decade’s most notorious strip clubs. He rubs shoulders with Hollywood’s A-list actors, rock stars, gangsters, bikers, dealers, and hustlers. Part friend, part father figure, and part caretaker, Johnny becomes the unlikely anchor for an unpredictable family of beautiful dancers, keeping the club running while helping the women navigate everything from troubled relationships to addiction.

Set against the neon glow of Los Angeles nightlife, DJ Chronicles is a raw, unfiltered journey through fame, temptation, loyalty, excess, and the price of living life in the fast lane.

Favorite Lines:

“Crazy Girls was open 365 days a year, so Johnny B had to work through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. To push away how he felt, he spent the holidays in an alcohol and drug haze, and as the new year began, he fell through the hole in the ozone. He didn’t know it then, but he was going face trials and tribulations that only prophets in the Bible had to rise above.”

“Isn’t there anybody in this town that doesn’t do drugs?”

“Unfortunately, you will never understand until it happens.”

My Opinion:

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.

DJ Chronicles is one of those books where you almost have to remind yourself that some of the things happening are supposed to be real. It’s chaotic, outrageous, sometimes funny, and occasionally downright unbelievable. But that’s also part of what makes it interesting. Foreman takes readers behind the scenes of Hollywood’s strip club industry during the 1990s, and it’s certainly not the glamorous version of Los Angeles that most people imagine.

The story follows Johnny B, a DJ working at Crazy Girls, a Hollywood strip club where there’s seemingly never a dull moment. Between the dancers, questionable business dealings, eccentric customers, and the constant stream of drama, Johnny finds himself surrounded by people who are just as unpredictable as the situations they get into. What starts as a look into the nightlife industry gradually becomes something much more complicated as drugs, relationships, money, and criminal activity begin to take up increasingly larger parts of his life.

One thing I found interesting was how the club almost becomes a character of its own. Crazy Girls isn’t just somewhere Johnny goes to work. It’s where friendships form, relationships fall apart, and people from completely different backgrounds somehow end up in the same room. Characters like Vito, Joe, Duke, and Johnson bring their own personalities and problems into the mix, and there’s something entertaining about watching how their lives constantly overlap. Some of the interactions are genuinely funny, while others make you wonder how anyone managed to function in such an environment.

I also appreciated that the book doesn’t stick entirely to the more outrageous stories from the club. Johnny’s personal life becomes increasingly important, particularly as his relationships and responsibilities begin to conflict with the lifestyle he’s become accustomed to. His struggles with substance use, his attempts to get himself back on track, and the consequences of his decisions give the story a little more substance than I initially expected. He’s certainly not always an easy character to like, and there were plenty of moments when I questioned his judgment, but I think that’s part of the point.

There’s a certain charm to how unapologetically messy the whole thing is. Foreman doesn’t seem particularly interested in making Johnny’s experiences sound sophisticated or respectable. Instead, the book feels like sitting across from someone who has spent years collecting wild stories and is finally getting the chance to tell them. Whether every detail is exactly as remembered is almost beside the point. It’s the personalities, the atmosphere, and the sense that absolutely anything could happen on a given night that keep the story moving.

Summary:

Overall, DJ Chronicles is a wild, often outrageous look at Hollywood nightlife in the 1990s, following a strip club DJ whose life becomes tangled in drugs, complicated relationships, criminal dealings, and plenty of unexpected drama. The colorful personalities and behind-the-scenes stories make for an entertaining, if sometimes chaotic, read. Readers who enjoy gritty memoir-style storytelling, unconventional life experiences, true-crime-adjacent narratives, and unfiltered accounts of the entertainment industry may find this one worth picking up. Happy reading!
